| Where is the closest park, farmers' market or public art installation in my area? What’s in my tap water? To where does my toilet flush? All of these are questions most of us take for granted and sometimes don’t even consider. While the website HabitatMap.org may not have direct answers to these questions, it is building a framework for every single one of us to share, map and obtain
information on these environmental issues and positive influences that directly affect our quality of life.
We recently finished redesigning HabitatMap.org for HabitatMap, Inc.—a non-profit environmental health justice organization launched in 2006 by Brooklyn activists documenting the links between the built environment of New York City neighborhoods and the health and well-being of the people who live, work and play in these neighborhoods.
Documentation has now developed nationwide and continues to grow. Michael Heimbinder, creator and founder of HabitatMap, Inc., assembled an international team to redesign the first generation website he had created. It was a global meeting of the minds—Brooklyn-based HabitatMap, Lunar Logic Polska out of Poland, who developed the entire backend of the site, artist Daniel Heimbinder, who graciously worked on the illustrations, and yours truly, who designed the new usability, overall aesthetic, messaging, flash animation and the brand-spanking-new user interface.
The result? A site that will have a global impact for not only our generation but generations to come.
Now we’re asking everyone to check out the new and improved site, create a profile and get one
step closer to taking control of your quality of life and building a network of information in your
neighborhood! www.habitatmap.org |
